Jake Knowles reflects on successful 2018 campaign

By Ben Shelton (Rome, GA) -- Jake Knowles enjoyed a fantastic 2018 campaign behind the wheel of his Knowles Race Parts & Bodies #66 Josh Roberts Trucking/ Coosa Heating & Cooling/ Longhorn Chassis Late Model.

In 32 starts this season the Georgia racer amassed eight wins to go along with 22 Top-5 finishes and 27 Top-10 finishes. His season-best victory was worth $10,000 and came in early November during the annual Southern 100 at Southern Raceway (Milton, Florida) with the Durrence Layne Dirt Late Model Series.

“We had a tough year in 2017, and because of that I don’t think anybody believed we would have such a great 2018 season, but that’s exactly what we did,” Knowles commented. “Our team worked their butts off over the off-season, and the hard work allowed us to hit the ground running this year. I’m very pleased with what we were able to accomplish. It seemed like just about every night that we were a contender.”

On the heels of his consistency Knowles finished second in both the Chevrolet Performance Super Late Model Series points and the Durrence Layne Dirt Late Model Series (DLDLMS) standings. In fact, he was only 10 points removed from the top spot with the DLDLMS.

“Probably the only downer on the year was not getting to battle with Ashton (Winger) for the championship in the series finale,” Knowles said. “We were in a good spot to give him a run for the title, but Mother Nature forced the program to be canceled, so I guess we’ll never know how it would’ve unfolded. Can’t take anything away from Ashton and his team though, because they had a great year.”

With confidence and momentum in his corner Knowles is now looking forward to an ambitious 2019 season.

“We are probably going to chase the full Chevrolet Performance Super Late Model Series again and run some higher-paying Crate Late Model races,” he noted. “However, a big focus for us is competing in more open-motor Super Late Model events. I’d like to tackle several of Ray Cook’s Spring Nationals and Southern Nationals events.

“Like most everyone else though, it will hinge on how much sponsorship we can secure for next season. We’ve got some great marketing partners in place, but we are actively pursuing more so that we can branch out to more races.”
